Tina Turner Biography: Tina Turner is an eight time Grammy award winning American singer-songwriter, dancer and actress. She is best known for her dynamic live performances which earned her the title "Queen of Rock & Roll." She is listed among Rolling Stone's list of immortals. She is acknowledged as one of the world's biggest selling music artists of all time having exceeded 180 million in record sales.

Anna Mae Bullock is the daughter of of Zelma (née Currie), a factory worker, and Floyd Richard Bullock, a Baptist deacon, farm overseer and factory worker. Anna was born to parents of European, African American and Native American descent specifically Chrerokee and Navajo tribes. Both she and her sister Alline Bullock were abandoned by their father and temporarily by their mother. In 1956 they left Tenessee and moved to St. Louis, MO. to reunite with their mother. It was in St. Louis that she met rock and roll musician Ike Turner. It took some convincing, but he finally relented and allowed her to sing with him. She was only 16 and still in high school when she convinced Ike to let her sing with him in what became The Ike & Tina Turner Revue. She becam recognized as a consummate live performer and by 18 she became an ocassional vocalist.

In 1960 when a professional vocalist failed to appear for a recording session Bullock stepped in and became the lead singer on the R&B hit "A Fool In Love." During the 1960s Tina, so named by Ike after Sheena: Queen of the Jungle, turned out a string of hit singles like "It's Gonna Work Out Fine," "I Idolize You," and the all time great hit "River Deep, Mountain High" with producer Phil Spector in his Wall of sound style. They also covered such classics as "Come Together," "Honky Tonk Woman," "I Want to Take You Higher" and Tina's signature single "Proud Mary" which peaked at number 4 in March of 1971.

After the success of "Proud Mary," Ike had opened his own recording studio, Bolic Sound. Ike produced Tina's first solo album, Tina Turns the Country On! in 1974. It failed to make an impact on the charts, as did the follow-up, Acid Queen (1975), released to tie in with Tina's critically acclaimed big-screen debut in the role of the same name in The Who's rock opera, Tommy. Ike who had been responsible for Tina since she was a teenager, ruled her and the Revue with an iron fist. His management of both the group and his wife got more out of hand as his drug abuse increased. After the couple was divorced Tina reavealed the story behind what had been a long abusive relationship with Ike. The marriage finally collapsed before an appearance in Dallas over the fourth of July weekend in 1976 when Tina fled after a particularly brutal beating at the hands of Ike with only thirty six cents and a gas station credit card in her possession. She had to rely on food stamps to survive.

Tina credits her conversion to Buddhism for giving her the strength to strike out on her own. Having walked out on Ike she was financially responsible to promoters for missed tour dates. To earn a living she became a solo performer supplementing her income with TV guest appearances on shows like The Hollywood Squares, Donny and Marie, The Sonny & Cher Show and The Brady Bunch Hour.

Her autobiography What’s Love Got To Do With It summed up the 16 years of marriage and her abusive relationship with Ike Turner. She was left with only her stage name and bills incurred for the cancelled tour and an IRS lien.

Her first 2 efforts after she struck out on her own, the 1978 album Rough and the following year's Love Explosion both failed. Even though she remained a very hot stage act in Europe, she was considered unmarketable by the American record industry. All of that changed in 1982 with the remake of the Temptation's "Ball of Confusion." The producers were so impressed by the recording, they persuaded her to record a cover of Al Green's Let's Stay Together. The recording became a huge hit in the U.K. These results led Capitol Records to release it in the U.S. where it became a huge R&B hit.

This success led Capitol to reassess her marketability which led to her fifth album Private Dancer. The album resulted in 5 chart singles. Capitol also released "What's Love Got to Do With It," which won the Grammy for Record of the Year and Best Female Vocal Performance. Private Dancer received a Grammy nomination and peaked at number 3 on the album charts. It remains one of the biggest selling albums of all time.

In 1985 Turner teamed up with Bryan Adams on "It's Only Love" which was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Rock Vocal Performance by a Duo or Group. She also contributed her voice to the best-selling charity song "We Are the World."

Turner appeared as the character, "Aunty Entity" in Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome with Mel Gibson and scored additional hits from the movie's soundtrack: "We Don't Need Another Hero," and "One of the Living."

In 1986 Turner set up home in Europe with Erwin Bach, a German-born EMI record company executive 16 years her junior. In 1986 she released her sixth solo album Break Every Rule which also proved to be a major success. The album spawned the Grammy nominated hit single "Typical Male," and the Grammy award winning single "Back Where You Started."

Foreign Affair would prove to be her last album of the 80s. The album which sold 6 million copies was nominated as Best Female Rock Vocal performance at 1989 Annual Grammy Awards. The album contained the hit single "The Best" as well as "I Don't Wanna Lose You."

Although it would be difficult to match her success of the 80s, Tina continued performing and recording in the 90s. She started the decade off with "Break Through The Barrier" a song from the soundtrack of the Tom Cruise film, Days of Thunder. She also recorded a version of "It Takes Two" with Rod Stewart for use in a high-profile Pepsi advertising campaign which became a big hit in Europe.

In 1991 Ms Turner released her first compilation Simply the Best which went platinum in the U.S. In 1993, Tina received a Grammy nomination for Best Rock Vocal performance, Female, for her cover of Elton John's "The Bitch is Back" from the Two Rooms tribute CD. She also had a cameo in the Arnold Schwarzenegger film, The Last Action Hero.

Angela Bassett got to star in the movie version of Tina's 1986 autobiography "What's Love Got to Do with It?" She was cast opposite Laurence Fishburne who played Ike. In 1995 she recorded the title theme from the James Bond movie GoldenEye. Shortly after that she released her eighth studio album Wildest Dreams and embarked on the Wildest Dreams World Tour.

1999 brought the album Twenty Four Seven which produced several hit singles including: "Whatever You Need" and "When the Heartache Is Over." The album was not as successful as her previous releases. She finished the millennium with her Twenty Four Seven World Tour which grossed over $80 million in the US alone.

In 1999, Tina recorded the theme song for "The Lion King II: Simba's Pride" called "He Lives In You." She also performed on VH1 Divas Live '99 in April 1999, alongside artists such as Cher, Whitney Houston, Elton John and Mary J. Blige.

After 2000 Turner retired from making major tours. In 2004, Turner released her latest greatest hits compilation album, All the Best.[49] It peaked at #2 on Billboard. The album is both her highest debut on the Billboard 200 and her highest-charting album ever in the U.S. Over ensuing years Tina continued to make public appearances and in 2004 released her second compilation All the Best which peaked at number 2 on Billboard. In 2005 after several live television performances in the U.S. and Europe, Ms Turner was recognized by the Kennedy Center Honors at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, DC and was elected to join an elite group of entertainers.

Jazz pianist Herbie Hancock released an album, paying tribute to his longtime associate and friend, singer-songwriter Joni Mitchell, entitled River: The Joni Letters on September 25, 2007. Turner contributed her vocals to a version of "Edith and The Kingpin."

On December 12, 2007, Turner issued a brief statement through a spokesperson regarding the death of her former husband Ike that day: "Tina is aware that Ike passed away earlier today. She has not had any contact with him in 35 years.

On April 29, 2008, Turner announced that she will embark on her Tina: Live in Concert Tour in early October. This is Turner's first tour since her record breaking Twenty Four Seven Tour. On May 5, 2008, she performed a concert at the Caesar's Place in Las Vegas with long time friend, Cher.
