After the group landed a recording contract with Dunhill Records in Los Angeles they made some early recordings with Beach Boy producer, composer and lead vocalist Brian Wilson under the name Redwood. After readin an article on how the Australian Aborigines slept with their dogs on cold nights, the coldest being a three dog night, the group changed its name to Three Dog Night. They then hired backup musicians Michael Allsup on guitar, Floyd Sneed on drums, Joe Schermie (from the Cory Wells Blues Band) on bass, and Jimmy Greenspoon on keyboards and soon became one of the most popular bands of the era. The groups first gold single was "One" in 1969 which they soon followed up with "Easy To Be Hard" from the musical Hair. The group had 3 number 1 hits "Mama Told Me Not to Come," "Joy to the World", and "Black and White." All told the group produced 14 gold selling albums and 21 Billboard top 40 hits, 9 of which went gold. In 1973 Joe Schermie quit the group and was replaced by Jack Ryland. By now Chuck Negron had become the primary lead singer and Hutton left the band. The following year the group disbanded partly due to the drug addiction of lead singer Negron. In the mid 80s the group began appearing again and are still active. Source Wikipedia |
