Spice Girls Biography: The group is composed of: Posh Spice (b. Victoria Adams, 17 April 1975, Goff's Oak, Hertfordshire, England), Mel B / Scary Spice (b. Melanie Janine Brown, May, 29 1975, Leeds, Yorkshire, England), Baby Spice (b. Emma Lee Bunton, January,21 1976, Barnet, England), Mel C / Sporty Spice (b. Melanie Jayne Chisholm, January, 12 1974, Liverpool, Merseyside, England), and Geri Halliwell /Ginger Spice (b. Geraldine Halliwell, August, 18 1972, Watford, Hertfordshire, England - this birthdate is the matter of some conjecture) - the five met at various unsuccessful auditions for film and dance jobs and the five ended up sharing a house in Maidenhead, Berkshire, in late 1993. The group is an aggregate of professional actresses and models each with an invented personna which is an extension of their own personalities.

After spending two years fighting to get a recording contract the group finally signed with Virgin Records, but they did not have a manager. They finally settled on Annie Lennox's manager Simon Fuller in 1995. Their first offering "Wannabe" became the first single by an all girl band to enter the British charts at number 1. They became the darlings of the media and as a result their second single "Say You'll Be There" was an instant replay of their first effort also entering the charts at number 1. Their first album Spice including the single "2 Become 1" both charted at number 1. In February of '97 they turned their attention to the American market releasing "Wannabe" in the U.S. They became enormous stars in the U.S. as well. They released their second album and movie by the same name Spiceworld later in the year. In May 1998, Geri Halliwell left the group to pursue a career as a soloist, but did not experience anywhere near the success of the Spice Girls. As is often the case with groups their personal lives began to take center stage interfering with their careers.
