Sheryl Crow Biography: The 8 time Grammy winner Sheryl Suzanne Crow is the daughter of an attorney who moonlights in a big band along with his wife as a trumpet player. In school she participated in choir and athletics. In high school she was a drum majorette and a member of the Pep Club, National Honor Society and Future Farmers of America. She has a degree from the University of Missouri where she majored in music education with emphasis on piano. At the time she attended the University actor Brad Pitt and ABC news anchor Elizabeth Vargas were also students.

She started her working career as an elementary school teacher in a St. Louis suburb while she sang in bands on the weekends. After she was introduced to a musician/producer who had a recording studio in the basement of his parents home she began writing advertising jingles. Her first effort was a back-to-school spot for the St. Louis department store Famous-Barr. She followed that up with jingles for McDonalds and Toyota. On 60 minutes she claimed to have made $50,000 on the McDonalds jingle alone and it was the lure of the big buck which caused her to put her teaching career on hold and head to the West Coast to seek her fame and fortune.

Armed with her demo jingle tapes see sought work in the L.A. music market, but at first all she found was rejection. She finally found work as a backup vocalist and wound up performing as a backup singer for Michael Jackson on his Bad tour. After the tour ended she sang backup for the Eagles Don Henley with whom she made her first appearance on Saturday Night Live. By 1990 she had attracted the attention of A&M Records for whom she cut her debut album which remains unreleased. She was not happy with the slick commercial result. After this she fell into a deep depression which lasted for months feeling her career was over.

In the summer of 1993 she appeared in the New Faces section of Rolling Stone, while her debut album hit the stores. The album featured many songs written by Sheryl including th efirst single "Leaving Las Vegas." At first the album garnered little attention untilthe release of "All I Wanna Do" which became a smash radio hit in the spring of 94. The album earned her several Grammy awards in 94. In 1996 the release of her self titled second album helped earn her the cover of Rolling Stone. The lyrics of her second album were far edgier than the first with political statements and songs about abortion. If It Makes You Happy"became a radio hit and brought her more Grammy attention. The album was banned by Wlmart for her criticism of their selling guns to minors in the track "Love Is A Good Thing." In 1997 she contributed the theme song for the James Bond movie .

The Globe Sessions, her third album, was released in 1998. In 1999 she released "Sheryl Crow and Friends: Live from Central Park." That year she also made her acting debut in The Minus Man, which starred her then boyfirend Owen Wilson. After taking a break and doing some touring she released C'mon, C'mon an album with a more pop feeling than her earlier efforts. Promotional material for the album and video showed her much more scantily clad than ever before, wearing bikinis and hot pants. She said that she wanted to show that a woman over 40 could still be sexy. The album spawned hits "Soak Up the Sun" and"Steve McQueen." In 2003 Crow showed her opposition to the Iraqi invasion by wearing a t-shirt on Good Morning America that read "I don't believe in your war, Mr. Bush!" during her performance.

In 2003 she released a greatest hits compilation The Very Best of Sheryl Crow which included many of her hit singles including the Cat Stevens ballad "The First Cut is the Deepest." In 2004 she appeared in the Cole Porter movie De-Lovely her performance of Begin the Beguine was widely panned by critics. in 2003 she met cyclist Lance Armstrong and the two started dating. They announced their engagement in September 2005, but mysteriously split in February of 2006. She released the album Wildflower in 2005 which debuted at number 2 on the charts. In February of 2006 she was diagnosed with early-stage breast cancer. The doctors said that her prognosis for recovery was good.
