Born: January 20, 1922 Hometown: Bentleyville, Pennsylvania Instrument: Trumpet Music Training: Started plying the trumpet at 5 years of age in his family's orchestra Bands and Orchestras: Glenn Miller, Jimmy Dorsey Signature Song: "Theme From Peter Gunn" Ray Anthony biography: He started playing in his family's group, the Antonini Family Orchestra, at age 5. He worked with local bands in the Cleveland, Ohio area during high school. He made his professional debut with Al Donahue in 1940. He was then hired by Glenn Miller but did not get along with the famous bandleader and left after 6 months. He then hooked up with Jimmy Dorsey before leaving to form his own band. He entered the Navy in 1942 where he entertained the troops in the Pacific. After the war he formed a new orchestra and signed a recording contract with Capitol Records. He continued to entertain thru the 80s. He wrote the "Theme from Dragnet," "Harbor Lights," and the novelty hit "The Bunny Hop." His biggest hit record was the theme from the television series Peter Gunn. |
