Ramones Biography: The Ramones were an American rock band often regarded as the first punk rock group. After forming in Forest Hills, Queens, New York in 1974, they performed and played 2,263 concerts, touring virtually non-stop for 22 years. In 1996, after a tour with the Lollapalooza music festival, the band went on a brief club tour and then disbanded. The band's three founding members—Joey Ramone, Johnny Ramone, and Dee Dee Ramone—all died within eight years of the break up.

The Ramones never achieved much commercial success during their years of recording and performing. Their only album to reach certified gold status in the U.S. was their compilation album Ramones Mania. Appreciation of the band has grown during the 2000s, and they now regularly appear on "all-time greatest" lists, such as Rolling Stone’s list of Immortals: 100 Greatest Artists of All Time, VH1's 100 Greatest Artists of Hard Rock, and Mojo's 100 Greatest Albums. In 2002, the Ramones were voted the second greatest rock and roll band ever in Spin Magazine, trailing only The Beatles. Non of the bands members were actually named Ramone. The name comes from a pseudonym used by Paul McCartney when he sought some privacy. The names of the initial band members were Jeffrey Hyman on drums, John Cummings on guitar, and Douglas Colvin on bass and lead vocals. Colvin was the first to use the name Ramone, calling himself Dee Dee Ramone. Other band members soon followed suit with Hyman becoming Joey Ramone an Cummings becoming Johnny Ramone.

The group got its start playing in clubs on New York's Lower East Side such as Max's Kansas City, and most famously CBGB's. The groups concerts at CBGB's became legendary. They signed a recording contract with Sire Records in 1975. However, the group did not have the same adoration outside of New YOrk and were plagued by hostile audiences.

On March 2, 2002, they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
