Born: March 18, 1970 City and Country of Origin: Newark, New Jersey Music Training: church choir Awards: Top Recordings: "U.N.I.T.Y" Queen Latifah Biography: Queen Latifah was born Dana Elaine Owens to Lancelot Owens, a police officer, and Rita Owens, a high-school art teacher. When she was 8 years old her parents were divorced. She sang in her church choir when she was only 8 and performed the number "Home" from the musical The Wiz in a high school play. She got the name Latifah from a muslim cousin. In 1988 local DJ Mark the 45 King heard a demo version of Latifah's single, "Princess of the Posse," and passed it on to Fab Five Freddy (who at the time hosted Yo! MTV Raps) who helped Latifah sign with Tommy Boy Records. In 1989 while she was only 18 she released her first album All Hail the Queen. It proved to be both a critical and commercial success. Nature of a Sista and Black Reign contained the hit single U.N.I.T.Y for which she won a Grammy. After releasing 4 rap albums she released an album of soul and jazz standards in 2004 called The Dana Owens Album. She also pursued a career in acting. She starred in the FOX sitcom Living Single, and had a supporting roles in the movies House Party 2 (1991), Juice, Jungle Fever(1991), and Set It Off (1996). A role as a lesbian in 1996 box-office hit, Set It Off and a subsequent role in the 1998 Holly Hunter film Living Out Loud helped focus attention on her acting ability. This helped land her the role of Matron "Mama" Morton in the Oscar-winning musical Chicago for which she was nominated for an Oscar.
