The group was started in Boise, Idaho in 1958 by Paul Revere Dick who already was a restaurant owner along with lead singer Mark Lindsay who worked at a bakery. They changed their name from The Downbeats to Paul Revere & the Raiders before their first record release, in 1960, on Gardena Records. They enjoyed their first Pacific Northwest hit with "Like, Long Hair," in 1961. When Revere was drafted he became a conscientious objector working in a mental institution, for a year and a half of deferred service, as a cook while Lindsay pumped gas. KISN DJ Roger Hart was producing teen dances and needed a band. A local bank teller told him about a group called Paul Revere something or other. He hired them and became their personal manager. He suggested that they record "Louie Louie," which he produced and placed on the SANDE label. Although they were beaten out by the Kingsmen who recorded the same song at about the same time in the same studio, it was the Paul Revere version that caught the attention of Columbia Records. Starting in the mid 60s the group attained its greatest popularity with hits like "Steppin' Out" in 1965, They followed it with "Just Like Me" that very same year. The band's popularity made them regulars on national television shows like Dick Clark's Where the Action Is, Happening '68, and It's Happening the latter 2 co-hosted by Revere and Lindsay. Playing on Revere's name the group appeared in Revolutionary uniforms. The groups popularity led to more hits like "Kicks," "Him or Me - What's It Gonna Be?," "Good Thing," "Hungry" and "Great Airplane Strike." Of these songs, the Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil anti- drug composition, "Kicks" became the best known. By the late 60s changing tastes rendered the group unfashionable, but they continued to turn out hits like "I Had A Dream," "Too Much Talk" and "Mr. Sun, Mr. Moon." Oddly the groups biggest hit, the gold single, "Indian Reservation" was not recorded by the band, but as a Mark Lindsay solo. Still Revere traveled cross country promoting the song which topped the charts in July of 1971 and became Columbia Records biggest selling single for almost a decade. Incorporating numerous personnel changes the group continues to perform. Source Wikipedia |
