It was in his teen years that his mother moved to suburban University City where Nelly took up baseball, and writing rhymes. While in high school he formed the group the St. Lunatics producing the regional hit "Gimmie What You Got." It wasn't until 2001 that he garnered mainstream popularity when the group released Free City. He established himself as one of the most famous rappers with the release of Nellyville. His controversial lyrics created a stir amongst the media and in 2003 when he recorded "Air Force Ones" MTV, MTV2, MuchMusic, and VH1 refused to play it due to it infringing on Nike's product of the same name. In 2004 he released "Shake Ya Tailfeather" featuring Murphy Lee and P. Diddy. His albums Sweat and Suit garnered national attention. The R&B offering Suit debuted at number 1 on the Billboard charts while the rap oriented Sweat debuted at number 2 that same week. Source: Wikipedia |
