As the daughter of world famous crooner and jazz pianist Nat King Cole, she grew up in an affluent area of Los Angeles just a few doors from the governor. She attended the Northfield Mount Hermon School in Northfield, Massachusetts. She was 15 years old when her father died of lung cancer. She has been married three times, and has a son, Robert Yancy, (by Marvin Yancy), born in 1977; her son is a musician who tours with her. She later married former Rufus drummer Andre Fischer, who co-produced her album Unforgettable... With Love. Her debut album Insepararble experienced a good deal of success on the pop charts climbing all the way to the top of the r and b charts and number 6 on the pop charts. More hits followed through 1980, including her biggest Pop hit, 1977's "I've Got Love On My Mind," as well as "Sophisticated Lady (She's A Different Lady)" (1976), "Our Love" (1978), and "Someone That I Used To Love" (1980). "I've Got Love On My Mind" and "Our Love" both earned certifications as Gold singles. During the 80s her career stalled as she fought to overcome drug addiction. By 1985 she was back on track and recording again. Her first effort was the release of the album Dangerous, on the Modern label. In 1987, the EMI Manhattan, album Everlasting sold over 2 million copies in the U.S. and earned her a Soul Train Award for Female Single of the Year for the #1 R&B ballad "I Live for Your Love." It also contained the hit singles "Jump Start," "I Live For Your Love" and a successful remake of Bruce Springsteen's "Pink Cadillac." "When I Fall In Love" also had a degree of success on the Adult Contemporary charts. 1989 brought Good To Be Back with the hit single "Miss You Like Crazy." Natalie is perhaps best known for her 1991 album Unforgettable... with Love which featured her own arrangements of her father's greatest hits. She had waited this along to avoid trying to capitalize on her father's name. The album sold over 5 million copies winning album of the year. The album featured a duet of her and her father singing "Unforgettable." It reached number 14 on the Billboard chart. Since then Cole has released several more albums of pop standards appealing to the adult audience. In 1999 she returned tot he Adult Contemporary charts with Snowfall On The Sahara. With the 2002, critically acclaimed, Ask A Woman Who Knows she turned to the jazz side of the spectrum. Her latest album Leavin', was released in 2006. Source Wikipedia |
