The heavy metal/glam rock band is easily identified by their face paint and stage outfits. Their live performances featuredfirebreathing, blood spitting, smoking guitars and pyrotechnics which helped make their branding of the KISS identity highly merchandisable. Gene Simmons (bass and vocals), Paul Stanley (rhythm guitar and vocals), Paul "Ace" Frehley (lead guitar and vocals) and Peter Criss (drums and vocals), the original lineup, became the most successful and identifiable in the band's history, and released a series of gold, platinum and multi-platinum albums throughout the 1970s. Criss and Frehley left the band due to substance abuse and creative differences by 1982 which caused the bands commercial success to wane during that time. In 1983 the group abandoned its makeup enjoying success through the remainder of the 80s. The original lineup, makeup and all, reunited during a wave of KISS nostalgia during the 90s and embarked on the KISS Alive Worldwide Tour in 1996. This led to the group being the top grossing act of 1996. Criss and Frehley have since left KISS again, and have been replaced by Eric Singer and Tommy Thayer, respectively. The band continues to perform, while Stanley and Simmons have remained the only two constant members. |
