Born: January 17, 1971 City and Country of Origin: Romeo, Michigan Music Training: Awards: Top Recordings: "Back From The Dead," "Bawitdaba," "Only God Knows Why," American Bad Ass," "Picture," <"Jackson, Mississippi" Kid Rock Biography: Robert James Ritchie is the son of a well-to-do car dealer in the Romeo, MI area. Due to increased friction in his relationship with his father over is life choices and his brother having lost a leg in a lawn mower accident young Robert left home at an early age. He moved into a housing project in Mount Clemens, MI where he used his own turntables to DJ at local parites. Bo Wisdom of Groove Time Production was so impressed by watching "that kid rock" that the name stuck. After doing some demo work for Groove Time he signed a contract, against his parents wishes, with Jive Records and took part in the "Straight From The Underground Tour" which included several heavyweith rap artists like Ice Cube and Yo-Yo. His first album "Grits Sandwiches For Breakfast" included the single Yo Da Lin In The Valley," which was mostly ignored by radio stations as it dealt with cunnilingus. Central Michigan University was fined by the FCC for playing it. After he was mocked by Vanilla Ice the label became nervous about Kid Rock and dropped him. He signed with the Indie record label Continuum. "The Polyfuze Method" garnered some success at Central Michigan University and the single "Back From The Dead" became a top 20 rap song. After the second single "U Don't Know Me" flopped he was dropped from the label. In 1994 he started his own label Top Dog and released monthly demo tapes through March 1995. In order to help pay for his sessions he took a job as janitor at Whiteroom Studios. During this period he released the local classic "Early Mornin' Stoned Pimp" which sold 100,000 copies out of his basement. This success led him to once again seek a record deal with a major label. To accomplish this end he performed a special showcase concert to attract the attention of a major label. The only label to show up was Atlantic who loved his performance, but found his material weak. To overcome the resistance he cut 2 additional demos "I Got One For Ya" and "Somebody's Gotta Feel This" which sealed the deal. In 1997 he added 2 new members to his band and released Devil Without a Cause and the single "Welcome 2 The Party" and embarked on the Vans Warped Tour. In spite of all his efforts both recordings flopped, but a chance meeting in a New York nightclub with MTV VJ Carson Daly led tot he video "I Am The Bullgod" and with Daly's support it became a modest hit. This led to 2 notable live performances on MTV after which Kid released the single "Bawitdaba" to renewed interest. His newly gained popularity soon led to appearances with Aerosmith and Run DMC at MTV's, 99 VMAs, Woodstock 99 and the Grammy Awards. He followed with 3 more singles from the album "Cowboy", "Only God Knows Why", and "Wasting Time." As a result Devil Without a Cause would eventually sell 11 million copies. In 2000 he acquired the rights to his earlier material and released The History Of Rock. The only new track from th ealbum was "American Bad Ass." The following year he released Cocky, however the album did not generate the same success as his earlier efforts. "Picture" a country influenced duet with Sheryl Crow proved to be the most successful single on the album. In 2003 he would delve even deeper into country with a self titled album. Kid Rock has 2 children, a son born to auto worker Kelley South Russell and a daughter. In 2001 he began dating model/actress Pamela Anderson. The couple announced their engagement in April 2002, but the couple split in the fall of 2003. In July of 2006 the couple made a surprise announcement, they had reconciled their differences and were married. In November, 2006 after 4 months of married bliss the couple announced that they were getting a divorce. Who said that celebrity marriages couldn't last? Source Wikipedia |
