A soprano saxophonist, who is equally at home on the alto or tenor sax, Kenny is the product of the smooth jazz sounds of musicians like Grover Washington, Jr. and David Sanborn. He first heard the saxophone being played on the Ed Sullivan Show in his native Seattle, WA. His mother rented him his first sax and Kenny learned how to play by practicing along with records of artists like Grover Washington, Jr. At Franklin High School he played in the school band. His first job as a professional was as a sax soloist for Barry White's Love Unlimited Orchestra in 1976. After he graduated from the University of Washington he became a credited member of The Jeff Lorber Fusion. He signed a recording contract in 1982 with Arista Records as a solo artist. Besides his solo releases he has also had numerous collaborations with artists like Whitney Houston, Toni Braxton, Natalie Cole , Steve Miller and Aretha Franklin. Although he has garnered more than his share of popular support for his music, he has at times been criticized by members of the music community for using the bright sounds of the soprano sax to cover up the fact that he at times plays out of tune. |
