He went home to Seattle to open a restaurant with his father. In the meantime Santana's road manager Walter "Herbie" Herbert was on Carlos' bad side after an abortive tour, so he had the idea to take guitarist Neal Schon, who he had befriended, and form a new band. So, they enlisted George Tickner (guitar) and Ross Valory (bassist) and Prairie Prince (drums) to form the new group. When Rolie's restaurant venture in Seattle was not doing so hot they dedcided that he too should join the band. After they recorded some demos and sent them to KSAN-FM the bay area rock station they were asked to submit a name. No one knows exactly who came up with it but the name chosen was Journey. The groups first gig was at Winterland New Year’s Eve 1973. Since Prairie Prince was still tied to the group Tubes the new band sought another drummer. They fianlly sttled on Aynsley Dunbar who had played with Frank Zappa, John Mayall, and Jeff Beck among others. In 1975 they recorded the self titled album Journey for Columbia Records. They followed it the following year with Look into the Future and a year later with Next. Due to the lagging sales of the album Next the group was asked to find a new direction. Journey enlisted the talents of southern California native Robert Fleischman as their new lead singer. The recording sessions that winter produced "For You" and "Wheel in the Sky," but due to managerial conflicts between the groups manager Herbie Herbert and Fleischman's manager Barry Fey, the union was short lived. In October of 1977 the band Steve Perry debuted as the new lead singer in San Francisco. With Perry adding his vocals to some of th egroups classic tracks plus the addition of new material like "Patiently," the groups next album Infinity in 1978 proved to be their most successful thus far reaching number 21 on the album charts. Drummer Dunbar was replaced by Steve Smith for the groups next album Evolution which yielded the groups first top 20 hit single "Lovin', Touchin', Squeezin'." In 1980 Departure reached number 8 on the album charts and "Any Way You Want It" topped out at 25 on the singles charts. Rollie was replaced by Jonathan Cain. The group kicked off the 80s with the album Escape which produced their first number 1 hit, and singles "Who's Crying Now," "Don't Stop Believin'" and "Open Arms" all made the top 10. Despite their commercial success the group continued to be bashed by the rock critics who grouped them with other so-called rock schlock bands like Foreigner, Asia, Survivor and so on. In 82 the group contributed 2 tracks to the Disney film Tron. The groups 1983 album Frontiers topped out at number 2 and produced the hit singles "Faithfully" and "Separate Ways." The release of Steve Perry's solo album in 1984 led to a falling out between he and manager Herbert and the eventual replacement of bassist Valory and drummer Smith with studio musicians, including American Idol's Randy Jackson, for the 1986 album raised on radio. The album included the hit singles "Girl Can't Help It" and "Be Good to Yourself" as well as "Why Can't This Night Go on Forever." After a tour which included Jackson on bass and Mike Baird on drums, Perry left the group in 1987. This started a bit of a mass exodus as Jackson left in 87 and Schon and Cain left in 1989. After this the group went dormant for several years. By the mid 90s the band regrouped, now consisting of drummer Deen Castronovo, vocalist Steve Augeri, Neal Schon, Ross Valory, and Steve Smith. On January 21, 2005, Journey received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. In recent years the group has experienced a rebirth due to the success of former bassist Randy Jackson in the music industry and on American Idol. Source Wikipedia |
