He was graduated from Springfield North High School at 16 as Salutatorian. He then attended the University of Pennsylvania where he majored in English with an emphasis African American literature and culture. While there he directed an a cappella group the Counterparts. After his graduation he first worked for a Boston consulting group and then worked in New York City. During this time he also performed on the nightclub circuit in both New York and Philadelphia. His first big break came when his former roommate at Penn Devon Harris introduced him to his cousin up and coming hip hop artist Kanye West. Since that time the two have worked together on many music projects. Legend signed on to West's music label G.O.O.D. Music. He sang melodic hooks on West's demo which eventually became the Grammy Award winning The College Dropout. His debut album, released in 2004, Get Lifted went platinum.
