When he tired of his role with the Minstrels he left to join the Chad Mitchell Trio where he first exhibited his talents as a songwriter. After all the original members left the group became Denver, Boise and Johnson, but Denver soon went his own way forging his solo career in 1969. One of his early compositions "Leaving on a Jet Plane," provided an international hit for Peter, Paul and Mary. His success as a solo act would have to wait until 1971 when he released "Poems, Prayers and Promises" which included his first major hit "Take Me Home, Country Roads." It proved to be the first of his 6 gold records. Hits followed through the mid '70s. In 1977 he starred along with George Burns in the movie Oh, God. Died: October 12, 1997 |
