She would quite literally bacome the artist who went from the out house to the penthouse. The isolation peaked her curiosity. To fill their time the family would sing six days a week. At the age of 8 her parents divorced. Jewel focused on listening to and emulating her favorite vocalists. She started writing songs while attending the Michigan's Interlochen Fine Arts Academy. After graduation she traveled around the country finally settling in San Diego, CA. She got a job playing at the Innerchange Coffee Shop. The owner of the coffee shop promoted her to the major record labels. She finally signed with Atlantic Records. She began touring even before the release of her first album Pieces of You hit the market. It did not sell well. Soon after she scored with the single "Who Will Save Your Soul." Seeing the potential the record compay released "You Were Meant For Me." In a matter of a few months she went from washing her hair in public washrooms to riding around in limosines. Pieces Of You, the album that bombed when first released wound up selling over 10 million copies. She next hit the charts with "Foolish Games" canning the material she had been working on for a second album. In 1998 she released her first poetry book "A Night Without Armor" which made the New York Times best seller list. Her next album "Spirit" debuted at number 3 on Billboard's top ten and the single "Hands" hit the top of VH1's top ten. |
