His virtuosity on the guitar allows him to play in just about any style. Born in the Hill District of Pittsburgh, Benson is now a resident of Englewood, New Jersey. He started playing with organist Jack McDuff's group. When he was 21 he recorded his first album as leader, The New Boss Guitar. He followed this effort with the album It's Uptown with the George Benson Quartet with Lonnie Smith on organ and Ronnie Cuber on baritone sax. After that the trio also released The George Benson Cookbook. By the late 70s Benson has signed on with Warner Bros. Records opening him up to a whole new audience. Around this time he began to add his vocals to the tracks on songs like "This Masquerade" which made it all the way to the top of Billboards's pop, jazz and r and b charts. "On Broadway" recorded the following year also made the pop and r and b top 10. He also had hits with "Give Me The Night" and "Turn Your Love Around" He also recorded the original version of "Greatest Love Of All" for the 1977 Muhammad Ali bio-pic, The Greatest, (which was later recorded successfully as a cover by Whitney Houston). During the 80s his career began to cool down. In 1992 Benson appeared on Jack McDuff's Colour Me Blue album and co-headline with Al Jarreau on an international tour to promote their 2006 album Givin' It Up. Source Wikipedia |
