His first professional job was accompanying vocalist Lois Deppe and he made his first recordings with Deppe and his orchestra in 1922. In 1923 he moved to Chicago where he played with several orchestras. He met Louis Armstrong in 1926 at the local musicians union hall and the two became friends. 1928 was the year in which Hines recorded his first 10 piano solos. He spent much of that year working with Jimmy Noone's Apex Club Orchestra. It was also in that year that he debuted with his first big band. Billy Eckstine would become the lead singer of the band in 1940 and in 1943 he would add Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Parker to the group. In 1948 he joined the Louis Armstrong All Stars playing with them for 3 years. He moved to California in 1951 and formed his own Hot Jazz band to cash in on the Dixieland revival. He continued playing through the 50s, but was pretty much forgotten by the 60s. He forged yet another comeback in 1964. Died: Apr 22, 1983
