After many years struggling through personnel changes the group finally achieved success during the latter part of the 90s with hit songs like "Wide Open Spaces", "Cowboy Take Me Away", and "Long Time Gone." The group is best known for instrumental virtuosity, lively performance and outspoken views particularly their opposition to fellow Texan George W. Bush prior to the invasion of Iraq. The group origianlly started with a bluegrass sound and consisted of Martie Erwin and Emily Erwin, Laura Lynch, and Robin Lynn Macy all classmates Greenhill School in Addison, Texas, a suburb of Dallas. There first album was a tribute to country and western star Dale Evans entitled Thank Heavens for Dale Evans. In 91 they released the Christmas single "Home on the Radar Range," and followed it with their second album Little Ol' Cowgirl featuring the steel guitar playing of legendary Lloyd Maines. The group made appearances in Texas as well as Nashville and began to garner attention. As the groups style became more contemporary and country as opposed to pure bluegrass some members became discontented with the musical direction the group was taking and left. In 1993 now less Robin Lynn Macy the group recorded their third album Shouldn't a Told You That. In spite of performances at the Bill Clinton inauguration and on CBS This Morning the group still could not produce a hit. In 1995 lead singer Laura Lynch was replaced by Lloyd Maines' daughter Natalie. It was at this time that Sony signed the group to its Monument Records label. The group now consisted of Martie on fiddle, mandolin and vocals; Emily on guitar, dobro, banjo and vocals; and Natalie singing lead vocals and in concert, guitar. "I Can Love You Better" a single released in '97 climbed to number 10 on the country charts. Their next album Wide Open Spaces released in 1998 produced 3 number 1 singles: "There's Your Trouble," "Wide Open Spaces" and "You Were Mine." The album sold 12 million copies making the list of the top 50 selling albums in American history. The followed their success with the smash hit album Fly in 2000 which went on to sell 10 million copies. Their next offering Home intorduced a somewhat less commercial sound, and although it only reached number 2 on the country charts it managed to garner 4 Grammys. Source Wikipedia |
