Dionne Warwick Biography: Her father was a gospel record promoter for Chess Records. Her first professional music experience was in a group named the Gospelaires which consisted of Dionne, her sister Dee Dee and her aunt Sissy Houston (mother of Whitney). The group can be heard singing backup on some of Ben E. King and The Drifters top hits such as "Spanish Harlem" and "Stand By Me." It was at just such a recording session that she met Burt Bachrach who had just composed a song along with lyricist Hal David called "Mexican Divorce" which the Drifters were preparing to record. Bachrach suggested that Dionne cut some demos for him. When they pitched one of the songs to the head of Scepter Records, he liked what he heard and signed Dionne to a recording contract. Bachrach and David wrote and produced her first single, in 1962, "Don't Make Me Over." When the label was printed there was a typo. They had spelled her name Dionne Warwick instead of Dionne Warrick. The name stuck, from then on she became Dionne Warwick.
