At age seventeen she won a scholarship from the Vancouver International Jazz Festival to study at the Berklee College of Music in Boston, and completed three terms. Her playing in Nanaimo caught the eye of bassist Ray Brown (former husband of Ella Fitzgerald) and long time member of the Oscar Peterson Trio. Together with drummer Jeff Hamilton they persuaded her to move to LA and study with pianist Jimmy Rowles with whom she also began to sing. In 1990, she moved to New York City. In 1993 she recorded her first album Stepping Out, which she recorded with John Clayton and Jeff Hamilton and in 1995 her second album Only Trust Your Heart. But, it was her third album which brought her into prominence All for You: A Dedication to the Nat King Cole Trio released in 1996 earned her a Grammy nomination and spent 70 weeks on the Billboard jazz charts. 1997's Love Scenes quickly became a hit. When I Look In Your Eyes released in 1999 earned her more Grammy nominations and Best Jazz Musician of the Year. The Look of Love went to number 1 on the Canadian album charts. The title track on from the album hit 22 on the adult contemporary charts. In 2001 Krall embarked on a world tour. Her concert at the "Paris Olympia" was recorded and released as Diana Krall - Live in Paris topped the Billboard jazz charts, went top 20 on the Billboard 200 and went top 5 in Canada. On December 6, 2003 at Elton John's estate outside London she married British musician Elvis Costello. Since her marriage Krall has worked with her husband as lyricist and recently began to compose her own songs which led to the release of The Girl in the Other Room.
