Dave Matthews Band Biography: The group was formed by original members by singer and guitarist Dave Matthews, bassist Stefan Lessard, Leroi Moore, violin player Boyd Tinsley, drummer Carter Beauford, and keyboardist Peter Griesar in Charlottesville, Virginia in 1991. Rather than serve in th emilitary the Quaker born Dave Matthews attended the University of Virginia starting in 1986. While tending bar at a local establishment Dave made the acquaintance of several musicians which gave rise to the idea of forming a band. The group needed a bassist so they added 16 year old high school student Stefan Lessard to complete the band. The group made its first public appearance on May 11, 1991.

The group released its first album Under the Table and Dreaming which included hit singles "What Would You Say" and "Ants Marching." Their follow up album brought the group national attention. By 1997 the groups popularity had swelled across the U. S. and around the world. To combat the bootleg market the grou released the album Live at Red Rocks 8.15.95. The group returned to the studio with collaborators banjoist Béla Fleck, vocalist Alanis Morissette, guitarist Tim Reynolds, keyboardist Butch Taylor, and the Kronos Quartet, to compose and record Before These Crowded Streets their third effort on RCA. In 1999 Dave Matthews released a solo album Dave Matthews and Tim Reynolds Live at Luther College, while the band released Listener Supported, a concert from September 1999. In October 2000 Dave Matthews and the band joined up in a Los Angleles recording studio to begin work on Everyday an album which was far more commercial than anything the group had done before. The results were predictable, the general publci loved it while the band along with the fan base felt betrayed.

In 2000 they had recorded what has become known as The Lillywhite Sessions. A rough work lauded by both the media and the fanbase which was later scrapped in favor of Everyday. When the fans got wind of this they were obviously upset by the directin the group had chosen. Due to the overwhelming fan support, particularly on th einternet for The Lillywhite Sessions the band went back into the studio in 2002 to re-record much of the material under the cover Busted Stuff. The album received modest media support and modest sales. Live at Folsom Field, Boulder, Colorado, recorded July 11, 2001 became their fourth live recording. On September 24, 2003 the DMB played a much ballhooed free concert on the Great Lawn in Central Park to benefit New York City schools. The event called The Central Park Concert is available on both CD and DVD. The band has continued to record and tour.
