During th elate 20s he alternated between band tours and club residencies. He soon became known as one of the best bandleaders and drummers of the new swing era. Buddy Rich cited Webb as an influence on his own drumming and referred to Webb as "the daddy of them all." Webb was married to a woman named Salleye. In 1935 he began featuring a teenage singer by th ename of Ella Fitzgerald. By 1938 Webb's health began to decline and he alternated time on the bandstand with time in the hospital until his death.
