Cher Biography: Cherilyn Sarkisian LaPiere met Salvatore "Sonny" Bono, a protege of music producer Phil Specter, when she was 17 years old. Spector used her as a backup singer on some of his girl group recordings in the early sixties. She cut one title with him called "Ringo I Love You" under the name Bonnie Jo Mason. Nothing came of her effort and she emerged along with Sonny as Caesar and Cleo. Together they cut "The Letter," "Do You Wanna Dance" and "Love Is Strange," but once again they had little success. Cherilyn was signed by Liberty Records' Imperial Label along with Sonny as a producer. She got airplay for her new cut "Dream Baby" which earned the two of them a contract with Reprise Records where they released their first hit single "Baby Don't Go." They moved to Atlantic's Atco Division where they recorded "I Got You Babe" which turned out to be their first major hit. Cher has had to reinvent herself more times than any other pop artist having survived 2 failed marriages and 5 decades of the vagrancies of pop music styles and tastes.
