Born: December 25, 1907 Hometown: Rochester, New York Instrument: Vocalist Music Training: Crane College Bands and Orchestras: Missourians, Alabamians Signature Song: "Minnie The Moocher" Cab Calloway biography: He started performing at an early age appearing as both a drummer and emcee mostly in Baltimore, Md. where he was raised. He relocated to Chicago in the late 20s working with his sister Blanche as the frontman for the group the Alabamians. He found his way to New York where he hooked up with the Missourians who were hired to appear at the Savoy Ballroom. His flambouyant leadership, dressed in a bright yellow "Zoot Suit" knee length jacket, puffy trousers and wide-brimmed hat, attracted most of the attention. This led to the band being renamed Cab Callowy and his Orchestra. In 1932 the band replaced Duke Ellington at the Cotton Club in Harlem. Throughout his career Calloway was known as a more than generous entrepreneur paying his musicians top dollar which enabled him to attract some of the best names in the business including: Doc Cheatham, Cozy Cole, and Jonah Jones. During his later years he worked on the stage in such performances as Porgy And Bess and Hello, Dolly, and appeared in movies like The Blues Brother, Dirty Dancing, The Cincinnati Kid (1965) , and A Man Called Adam (1966).
