Blondie Biography: The new wave/punk group started when guitarist Chris Stein joined forces with Deborah Harry, former member of the folk rock group Wind In The Willows, and the girl group The Stilettos. They enlisted drummer Clem Burke, keyboard player Jimmy Destri and bass player Gary Valentine to form the group Angel and The Snake. They changed the name after just 2 shows and became regulars New York's Club 51, Max's Kansas City, and CBGB's. They signed with Private Stock Records in th emid 70s and and released their debut album Blondie in 76. After the label was bought out by the U.K.'s Chrysalis Records the album was re-released in 77 along with the single "Rip Her To Shreds." The group first rose to fame not in the U.S. or the U.K., but in Australia where a video clip of "In The Flesh" the B side of "Rip Her To Shreds" was played by mistake. The result was a number 2 hit and a number 5 album on the island continent.

It was the late 70s and the group tried its hand at disco with "Heart of Glass" which gave the group its first number 1 hit. The accompanying video would still be considered modern by today's standards. The 1980 single "Rapture" marked the groups flirtation with the new hip-hop genre and reached number 1 on the U.S. charts. In 1982 the band broke up with Deborah Harry focusing on her solo and acting career. In 1999 the group reunited.
