Billy Holiday biography: She arose from an impoverished youth spent in Baltimore, Md. moving to New York City in the 1920s to sing in Harlem nightclubs. Her first recording session was in 1935 with then unknown musicians Benny Goodman, Lionel Hampton and Teddy Wilson which brought her public attention. She later became the featured vocalist with such orchestras as Count Basie and Artie Shaw. Her extremely heart felt Blues style grew out of a life of pain and sorrow which led to her long time heroin addiction. Billie Holiday died in Metropolitan Hospital in New York City while under arrest.
Died: 1959
