Barry Manilow Biography: His father left the family when he was two years old and he adopted his mother's maiden name Manilow. He worked in the mailroom at CBS while attending Julliard and took a job as musical director of the CBS show Callback after graduation. He also spent his time writing, producing and performing advertising jingles for high profile clients such as State Farm, DR. Pepper, McDonald's and Kentucky Fried Chicken. In 1971 he was hired by Bette Midler to be her pianist, arranger and musical director. Together they performed at some of New York's gay bathhouses. In 1972 he helped create Ms. Midler's first two albums "The Divine Miss M" and the follow up recording. As a result of his success with Beth he was able to land his own record deal with fledgling Bell records. His first recording effort was not successful. When Bell became Arista Records, the head of the label Clive Davis suggested that Manilow record a pop tune "Brandy" which had been successful in England. He changed the named to "Mandy" to avoid confusion with the Looking Glass hit "Brandy." The success was immediate and Barry Manilow was on his way.
