Born: October 13, 1980 City and Country of Origin: Glen Cove, New York Music Training: Joined gospel choir at age six, dance training at the Bernice Johnson Cultural Arts Center Awards: Top Recordings: "Always on Time," "What's Luv?," "Foolish" "Rock Wit U (Awww Baby)" Ashanti Biography: Ashanti Douglas started singing in a gospel choir when she was only 6. She was signed by a management team after she was spotted in a talent show in 1994. After gigs at the China Club and Soul Cafe she performed at Madison Square Garden. This earned her the opportunity to work with multi-platinum producer Irv Gotti of Murder Inc. At first she teamed up on recordings with artists like Jennifer Lopez, Ja Rule, Fat Joe and the Notorious B.I.G. which helped launch her solo singing career in 2002. Her first album the self titled Ashanti sold a half million copies and her follow up Chapter II continues to be a hot seller. |
