Born: January 25, 1981 City and Country of Origin: Manhattan, New York Music Training: studied classical piano from age 7; choir in early teens; Manhattan's Professional Performance Arts School Awards: 2001 Grammy Song of the Year, "Fallin'; Best New Artist; Best Female R&B Vocal Performance, "Fallin';" Best R&B song "Fallin';" Best R&B Album, Songs in A Minor Top Recordings: "Fallin'," "If I Ain't Got You," Alicia Keys Biography: Alicia Keys the classically trained pianist who writes her own songs was born and raised on West 42nd St. in New York City's Hell's Kitchen. She had very good grades in high school and was able to graduate as her school's valedictorian at the age of 16. She enrolled at Columbia University, but later left to pursue her music career. She signed with Clive Davis' Arista Records in 1998 and follwed him to his new label J. Records. At 19 she recorded her first CD, Songs In A Minor, The album debuted on Billboard's 200 at number 1 and included her first hit single "Fallin'." "If I Ain't Got You" broke the record for the longest stint on the pop charts, remaining there for over 1 year. |
