Born: March 12, 1940 City and Country of Origin: Milwaukee, Wisconsin Music Training: church choir Awards: Top Recordings: "We're in This Love Together," Look To The Rainbow, All Fly Home, Breakin' Away, "God Bless The Child" Al Jarreau Biography: Seven time Grammy winner Al Jarreau is the only vocalist in history to win the award in 3 different categories: jazz, pop, and R&B. The son of a vicar he attended Ripon College, where he sang non-professionally with a group called the Indigos, graduating in 1962. He went on to earn a master's degree in Vocational Rehabilitation from the University of Iowa. While working as a rehabilitation counselor in San Francisco he joined a small jazz club trio headed by George Duke and decided to make singing his profession. He moved on to Los Angeles where he worked in clubs like Dino's, the Troubadour and Bitter End West. He was also able to make several television appearances on shows like Johnny Carson, Mike Douglas, Merv Griffin and David Frost. He worked in between acts at the Improv with such comedians as Jimmie Walker, and John Belushi. He was spotted by Warner Bros., in 1975, with whom he released his critically acclaimed first album We Got By. This gained him international acclaim earning him a German Grammy. His second album Glow earned him a second German Grammy. One of Jarreau's most commercially and artistically successful albums is Breakin' Away (1981), which includes the hit song "We're in This Love Together." He wrote and performed the Grammy-nominated theme to the 1980s American television show Moonlighting. Jarreau like Ella Fitzgerald is well known for his scat singing and like the Mills Brothers his ability to mimic different instruments. He sang on the recording of "We Are the World. In 1996 he appeared on Broadway in the role of the Teen Angel in Grease. On March 6, 2001 he received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
